I am a Danish writer, poet, haijin and artist, illustrating all my books myself. Amongst other things I have published 4 collections of haiku and edited Danish Haiku Today, presenting Danish haiku poets, since 2012. Se my CV which follows. I hereby send you Danish Haiku Today 2019 for review.
The leading international haiku WEB site, The Haiku Foundation, has just published the 4th edition of Danish Haiku Today. The 2019 version presents the largest number of currently living Danish haiku poets, namely 43, in English and Danish. Amongst others Niels Hav, Hanne Hansen, Viggo Madsen, Arne Herløv Petersen, Johannes S. H. Bjerg, Mona Larsen, Thorvald Berthelsen and Pia Tafdrup.
The Haiku Foundation is founded by Jim Kacian, Washington D.C. The purpose is
“1) to archive our first century of English-language haiku,
2) to expand possibilities for our second, and
3) to seek active exchange with other haiku languages and cultures around the world.”
On behalf of The Haiku Group of the Danish Authors’ Society Thorvald Berthelsen has introduced Danish haiku and presented Danish haiku poets in The Haiku Foundation World of Haiku feature and its upcoming Haiku Encyclopedia in English and Danish.
The World of Haikus feature on Danish haiku can be found here: http://www.thehaikufoundation.org/omeka/items/show/1190
Back in 2011 The Haiku Group of the Danish Authors’ Society published their 10th anniversary anthology, Blade i Vinden.
In May 2012, the Haiku Group had an arrangement with the former President of the European Council. Herman Van Rompuy. To this they made an addition in English and Danish to Blade i Vinden. On the occasion of The Haiku Foundation’s Encyclopedia’s coming article on Danish haiku, the editor, Thorvald Berthelsen, together with Niels Kjær, Bjarne Kim Pedersen and the publishing house, Ravnerock, made this fourth extended edition of the publication, Danish Haiku Today 2019, in English and Danish. It can be downloaded for free here:

Thorvald Berthelsen. Short CV and Publications:
Thorvald Berthelsen was born in 1948 and lives in Sakskøbing, Denmark. He has published six poetry collections, Utidig I tide ( Untimely in due time), Hulens år (Years in the cave or Damned year), Utidig I tide 2 (Untimely in due time 2), Sakskøbing Blanding (Sakskøbing Mixture) Mørkeleg (Dark play) and Huds tektoniske plader (The tekthonic plates of skin).
His poems have been translated into Swedish, English, Arabic, Kurdish, Bosnian, Serbian, Hungarian and German. Most recently, Zeitsprünge und ander Spuren appeared at Brighton Verlag in 2017.
Thorvald Berthelsen has previously written books on history, literature, education and IT. He has also translated from Bosnian, Kurdish, German, Flamish, English, French and Swedish.
His short poems or haikus are often fragmentary surreal collage landscapes in a western tradition that do not follow all the Japanese rules. The key is that the poem puts a moment in perspective in its microcosm and expands the realization in the moment and the poem with unexpected twists.
Thorvald Berthelsen makes and also exhibits collages illustrating his own books.
He has published poems in papers and periodicals like Information, Politiken, Östran, the Bosnian magazine Riječ (words), the Serbian Haiku Novine, the Kurdish Haikuest as well as in Danish, English and Swedish anthologies.
During the 4th International Poetry Festival in Brcko Bosnia, in November 2015, Haiku Mjesavina (Haiku Mixture) was released, a selection of short poems – mainly haiku – from his four collections of poems.
”The most important features of his Po Etic are a koncentrated and tight poetic expression of incredible simplicity combined with an extreme immersion into metaphors.” Senahid Neziroviz in Riječ, about Haiku Mjesavina.
In 2017 a collection of his poems was published in Germany with the title Zeitsprünge und andere Spuren (Time leaps and other tracks).
He has from 2012 – 2015 been the chairman of The Society of Authors from South Zealand and Lolland-Falster, StORDstrømmen. Was therefore in 2014 appointed Cultural Frontrunner by the Danish Minister of Culture and the Minister for Housing, Urban and Rural Development, with the following explanation from the Minister of Culture:
“Thorvald Berthelsenhas through his voluntary work as president of the association lifted the local area’s cultural self-awareness and by taking the lead, his commitment and energy rubbed off on the society around him.”
Thorvald Berthelsen has himself or together with others edited several anthologies. Amongst others Richard Winther deluge and doom, StORDstrømmen Anthology 2015, presenting 39 authors and 11 illustrators from South Zealand and Lolland-Falster and last summer he published New poetry from Bosnia Hercegovina, presenting 43 poets. For this he was awarded the prize for best editing at the Sarajevo bookfair, 31. MEĐUNARODNI SAJAM KNJIGA, this April 2019 He has also arranged a lot of other literary events.
He arranged a joint reading of Danish haiku poets with previous EU president Hermann van Rompuy in Copenhagen in 2012. Since then he has edited an English-Danish-language presentation of Danish haiku poets. In November last year, he presented 43 Danish haiku poets in the leading international haiku publisher The Haiku Foundation with a new enhanced version of the anthology, Danish Haiku Today 2019.
